Water supply

The SCA manages a complex network of dams, storages and pipelines to provide an adequate supply of water to its customers.

From dams built at the turn of last century, to the most recent addition to the water supply system - the 1970's Shoalhaven Scheme - the SCA's dams and pipelines provide a fascinating guide to the evolving history of Sydney's water supply network.

The SCA is responsible for the management and safe operation of its dams and for managing the water stored in and selected from the dams.

To ensure the best quality water is selected from its storages, the SCA uses a number of reservoir management processes including:

  • selecting from different reservoirs
  • selecting from different levels in the storages
  • destratifying reservoirs, and
  • monitoring water quality and analysing trends.

The SCA also manages the recreational areas at its major dams, which are popular locations for a picnic and sightseeing.
