The Bendeela recreation area experienced heavy rains and flooding during March 2012. Some sections of the recreation area are still very damp and have been damaged. To prevent further damage and to help with the rehabilitation of the site, the SCA has restricted vehicles and camping in some areas over the school holiday period. These restrictions include the lower terrace adjacent to the river in the back area of the camp ground.
Bendeela Recreation Area is on the banks of the Kangaroo River arm of Lake Yarrunga, near Kangaroo Valley, about 150 kilometres southwest of Sydney. It is near to Tallowa Dam.
The SCA is developing a Bendeela Recreation Area Masterplan to guide future sustainable management and facilities at the Bendeela Recreation Area. We are inviting the local community and regular users to get involved.
The facilities at the picnic area include:
- Toilets/disabled toilets
- Drinking water
- Non-powered campsites
Note: Fishing, swimming and non-powered boating are permitted at Tallowa Dam and Bendeela Recreation Area. For further information see Bendeela Recreation Area fact sheet
Opening hours
- Open 24 hours a day, every day of the year
- Access to some SCA areas may be restricted sometimes due to construction or operational activity, or for environmental reasons.
To help the SCA manage the picnic and camping facilities, please notify us in advance if a group of more than 50 people will be visiting any of our sites. You can do this by using our large group notification form.
When does the gate open to the rear camping area?
Bendeela Recreation Area is managed as two separate areas, depending on the number of vehicles and visitors. The front camping area is open 24 hours a day, all year round for vehicle based camping. The rear camping area is closed to vehicle access by a locked gate during non peak periods. Visitors are free to walk in and picnic and camp in the rear camping area at all times. The rear camping area is routinely opened to vehicles during peak periods (see opening and closing times below).
