Streamwatch

Streamwatch is a dynamic environmental action network, educating and empowering communities to work together for healthy catchments.

Streamwatch works with community and school groups to raise awareness of the natural environment by training participants to test the water quality of our rivers and streams.

Streamwatch is coordinated in the drinking water catchments by the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA), with support from its partner Sydney Water Streamwatch.

SCA Streamwatch groups participate in the NSW Water Bug surveys, the new 'Streams Alive' primary school program, Murder Under the Microscope, the Streamwatch Quality Assurance program, catchment 'snapshot' days, regular water bug sampling and water quality testing.

The SCA supports new and existing groups with:

  • briefing/planning meetings
  • preparation of Streamwatch Plans
  • group water quality monitoring and water bug sampling
  • verification and interpretation of results
  • training and re-training sessions
  • training in using the Streamwatch database and e-Lib
  • ongoing technical support
  • promotion of special events, and
  • support in participating in the QA program.

The SCA supports over 30 Streamwatch groups in the drinking water catchments and is working to expand its program.
