New technology delivers benefits to Goulburn’s sewers

22 July 2004

A $300,000 project to upgrade sewer lines in Goulburn’s Central Business District is nearing completion, NSW Environment Minister Bob Debus said today.

More than a kilometre of pipeline is being upgraded in a project jointly funded by the State Government and Greater Argyle Council.

Mr Debus said the upgrade would provide better infrastructure for the Goulburn community and protect water quality in the nearby Wollondilly River.

“Both council and the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) recently identified areas in need of repair by using Closed Circuit Television to inspect the state of the pipes,” Mr Debus said.

“This led to the current upgrade which will significantly reduce sewer overflows and leaks in the Goulburn CBD and protect the health of the Wollondilly River.”

Greater Argyle Mayor Paul Stephenson said use of new technology would cause minimal disruption to traffic and pedestrians in the city centre.

“The latest technology is being used to reline the pipes which provide a brand new structural interior lining and minimise the need to dig up existing pipe,” he said.

The SCA, under its “Healthy Catchments Program” is working with a number of councils in the water supply catchments to upgrade sewerage infrastructure and help improve the quality of rivers and streams.
