Avon Dam closed to public during hazard reduction burn - Minister Phillip Costa MP - 10 May 2010

Please note Avon Dam will now also be closed to the public on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 May to protect the community from the risk of falling trees in the area.

Minister for Water Phil Costa today said Avon Dam will be closed to the public on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 May, to protect public safety during a hazard reduction burn.

“As part of their important bushfire prevention work, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will conduct a hazard reduction burn in the area between Avon and Nepean dams next Tuesday and Wednesday,” Minister Costa said.

“To protect the community from the risk of falling trees and smoke in the area, Avon Dam Road and the Avon Dam picnic area will be closed during this burn.

“The picnic areas at Avon Dam, which have recently undergone a $65,000 upgrade, will of course be open this Mother’s Day weekend, and will reopen to visitors again next Thursday, 13 May, in time for next weekend.

“I encourage families and groups planning picnics next Tuesday and Wednesday to consider using the picnic facilities at the nearby Nepean Dam, or to visit the new picnic areas at Warragamba Dam.

“Visitors to Warragamba Dam can enjoy new covered picnic areas as well as a newlyconstructed viewing platform, which were installed during a $240 million upgrade at the dam.”
