Minister opens new exhibition at Warragamba Dam - Minister Phillip Costa MP - 3 September 2010
NSW Minister for Water and Member for Wollondilly Phil Costa today opened a new state-of-the-art visitor exhibition at Warragamba Dam.
Mr Costa said the exhibition would enhance what was already one of western Sydney’s most visited attractions.
“Warragamba Dam’s idyllic picnic areas, sweeping views of the Burragorang Valley and impressive engineering have made it a hugely popular destination for Sydney families for generations,” Mr Costa said.
“Since the areas surrounding the dam were reopened last year following a major upgrade, more than 100,000 visitors have flocked to the dam.
“Warragamba Dam is one of our most iconic pieces of infrastructure – the backbone of Sydney’s water supply – it is fitting that it can now boast a fabulous, new visitor exhibition.
“This new exhibition will add a new dimension to what is already a popular venue, allowing school groups, tourists and anyone with an interest in engineering to learn more about this impressive piece of infrastructure.
“The exhibition features detailed displays about our dams and catchments, audio visual material, historic items and a cutting edge ‘drops of wisdom’ interactive table, which is the largest of its type in Australia.
“It has been 50 years since Warragamba Dam was first opened, and this exhibition gives visitors a snapshot of its history, and an insight into the journey water takes from the time it falls in the catchments to the time it comes out of our taps as clean, healthy drinking water.
“Visitors can also learn about the ongoing challenge of securing the water supply for our largest city, from before white settlement to present times and beyond.
“The exhibition caters to a wide range of ages and I encourage people to head out to Warragamba Dam to take a look around this fantastic new facility.
“I would like to acknowledge everyone who contributed to developing this world-class exhibition – it is truly a wonderful addition to our region.”
The new exhibition is located in the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre, off Production Avenue, Warragamba, and is open every day from 10am to 4pm, except for Christmas Day and Good Friday.
A celebration of Warragamba Dam’s 50th Anniversary will be held in October. Find out more information about the Warragamba Dam 50th Anniversary event.
