Local Planning Direction 5.2 Sydney Drinking Water Catchments

The Local Planning Direction 5.2 Sydney Drinking Water Catchments is issued under section 117 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The direction applies to all areas of the drinking water catchment and affects 15 local government areas. The direction applies to the development of planning proposals, including comprehensive local environmental plans, and amendments to local environmental plans.

Under this planning direction, planning authorities, including local councils, must develop their planning proposals in accordance with the general principle that water quality must be protected within the Sydney drinking water catchment. They must also consider the Sydney Catchment Authority's (SCA) strategic land and water capability assessments when preparing planning proposals.

This planning direction provides specific guidance on zoning in the Special Areas or land controlled and managed by the SCA. It specifies when planning authorities must consult with the SCA when developing their planning proposals.
