Temporary limitations to visitor facilities at Warragamba Dam

No access to Warragamba Dam

Public acess to Warragamba Dam and Haviland Park (the inner picnic area) is currently unavailable.

Background

Warragamba Dam and Haviland Park were closed in 1998 to enable construction of an auxiliary spillway around the dam. Although construction of this spillway has been completed, further upgrade works are continuing. These include work on the floodgates, electrical upgrade, replacement of the maintenance depot lost in the 2001 bushfires, and redevelopment of visitor facilities.

The SCA has also increased security at Warragamba Dam, in line with security procedures now in place at all major infrastructure assets in NSW.

Haviland Park will reopen when the planned redevelopment of visitor facilities is complete.

Current facilities

The Visitor Information Centre and Picnic Area No 1 (the outer picnic area) remain open. Facilities include parking, toilets, picnic tables/seats, shelter shed, hot water and some electric BBQs. The kiosk is no longer operating, however there are take-away food facilities in Warragamba township.

Barbeques

The SCA has removed the wood-fired BBQs from all its recreational grounds in line with its Environmental Plan and Energy Management Program. A number of more efficient and environmentally friendly electric BBQs are now available.

Viewing Warragamba Dam

Although access to the dam is not permitted, visitors can see the dam wall and the recently constructed auxiliary spillway from a viewing platform located at the end of 18th Street, Warragamba.

The impact of the drought on the water level in Lake Burragorang can be seen from Burragorang Lookout at Nattai, about 40 minutes south of Warragamba Dam.
