Warragamba Dam
Will you be able to see how full the dam is?
The new Visitor Centre and grounds include three viewing platforms providing views of the dam and Lake Burragorang behind the dam wall. Views of Lake Burragorang are also available at Burragorang Lookout.
Dam levels for all Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) dams are updated weekly on the SCA's website.
Why is the dam wall closed?
Warragamba Dam wall is currently a construction site for a major project to upgrade the dam's flood gates and remains closed to the public. Access to the dam wall will be reviewed in 2012 when this project is complete. The review will take into account a range of factors including security requirements.
Can you still go on the suspension bridge?
No. The suspension bridge caught fire and was damaged by the Christmas 2001 bushfire. It was later removed for safety reasons. The steel head tower supporting structure was kept, cleaned and painted.
Will you be able to take a guided tour inside the dam?
Guided tours inside the dam will not be available due to security requirements. However the new Water for Life exhibition in the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre provide an engaging, interactive experience for visitors.
Will school group excursions still be available?
Access to some parts of the dam and its surrounds will be available to booked school groups as a part of a structured, syllabus linked Warragamba School Education Program.
Warragamba Dam Grounds
Are there gardens near the dam?
The Warragamba Dam Grounds have been landscaped to incorporate water thrifty, low maintenance native plants.
Are picnic and barbecue areas available near the dam?
There are no barbecues in Warragamba Dam Grounds. Portable gas barbecues may be used, but not solid fuel barbecues.
Barbecue facilities are available nearby in the Warragamba Recreational Reserve.

Are there any bushwalks near the dam?
No. The area around Lake Burragorang is classed as Special Area. This legislated classification prevents public access to most areas within three kilometres of the lake to protect water quality.
Is there a coffee shop or canteen available on the grounds?
No, however food and beverages are available in Warragamba township nearby. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic to the Warragamba Dam Grounds.
Can I operate my commercial business in the grounds?
No commercial operations are permitted within Warragamba Dam Grounds.
Can I bring my dog or other pets in the grounds? Can I ride a horse in the grounds?
No. The area around Lake Burragorang is classed as Special Area. This legislated classification prohibits horses and pets within three kilometres of the lake to protect water quality.
New visitor centre
When did the visitor centre re-open?
The Warragamba Dam Grounds, including the new visitor centre, reopened to the public in November 2009. Visitor information is available from the foyer and you can watch a video presentation on the construction of Warragamba Dam in the Burragorang Room. The visitor centre's new Water For Life exhibition opened in August 2010.
Is there a working model of the dam in the new visitor centre?
The Water for Life exhibition in the new visitor centre features detailed displays about our dams and catchments, audio visual material, historic items and a cutting edge ‘drops of wisdom’ interactive table. The working model at the old visitor centre was worn out and very fragile. It could not be dismantled or relocated and restored to working order .
Is there a coffee shop in the new visitor centre?
