Sewage strategy

Improving the management and treatment of sewage in Sydney's drinking water catchments is a high priority for the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) to reduce the risk of pathogens and nutrients from sewage entering the water storages.

The SCA's Sewage strategy aims to reduce threats to water quality from sewage by:

  • minimising the impact of sewage treatment plant discharges on water quality
  • helping local councils in the catchments manage on-site sewage systems
  • reducing raw sewage leaks and overflows into the environment from sewer pipes and pumping stations
  • minimising the impact of unlicensed sewage treatment system discharges on water quality.

The Sewage strategy includes the following four key programs:

  • Accelerated sewerage program
  • On-site sewage management grants program
  • Sewerage system reticulation management program
  • Unlicensed sewage treatment system management program.
