Wingecarribee Swamp

Wingecarribee Swamp formed during the past 5,000 years and is unique in Australia. It is recognised as one the best examples of a montane peatland on mainland Australia and is immediately upstream of the Wingecarribee Reservoir, which plays an important role in water supply for the Southern Highlands, Illawarra and Sydney Regions.

The Swamp is internationally renowned, and is recognised as having significant environmental attributes. It is one of Australia’s largest peat swamps and provides habitat for certain species classified as endangered or vulnerable under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (NSW).

The swamp is also known to contain several indigenous and non-indigenous heritage sites.

Wingecarribee Swamp is located approximately 90 kilometres south west of Sydney and 15 kilometres east of Bowral.

Public access to the Swamp is not permitted, as it is within a Schedule One Special Area.
